Glamour Magazine – April 2010

Amanda Seyfried - Glamour magazine April 2010

Amanda Seyfried - Glamour magazine April 2010

This month’s Glamour is like an episode of The One Show – super eclectic. There are happy articles and sad ones; depressing and uplifting; shockingly informative and mundanely pointless yet somewhat interesting; from fashion and beauty tips to politics and career advice. It even has The One Show co-host Christine Bleakley. However, this diverse mix of topics over 300 odd pages actually works extremely well. This is the sort of issue where you have to earmark certain pages that interest you because they give useful make up tips or life advice or because you may want to refer back to a particular topic or article in the future; that’s the sign of a great magazine when its contents are timeless.

Even the ads were interesting, with lots of perfume and skin care samples and interesting promotional pages. Glamour has clearly realised that making money from ads comes from people actually buying and reading the magazine and in order to achieve that, you have to produce a great one. In fact, Glamour care about us so much, they even included a free bottle of James Brown shampoo/conditioner/hair repair (three issues of Glamour to collect all three bottles. Just remember to recycle the extra 2 issues!)

This month’s cover star is Mamma Mia’s Amanda Seyfried and she seems like an interesting enough girl so I don’t understand why the “Interview” was just broken down into a “20 things you never knew about Amanda” feature (page 244). It seems a bit of a cop out for actually writing a full article, or perhaps there wasn’t enough content; I got more out of the Christine Bleakley interview (page 127), but I suppose she hasn’t got a film to promote this month. Still, there are lots of pretty pictures and it is nice to read about a rising star, even if it is just in bullet points. I wonder who next month’s cover girl will be; I’d love to see new favourites, BAFTA winner Carey Mulligan or Alice in Wonderland’s Mia Wasikowska.

Other articles to look out for are:

  • Page 50 – Should your salary be a secret? – will it destroy the gender pay gap or breed more resentment?
  • Page 53 – 8 websites we worship – where have these sites been all my life?!
  • Page 57 – the Armani Code ad just smells REALLY nice…
  • Page 72 – I’m a celebrity, get me out of this! – the shocking and quite frankly sickening truth about the lengths celebrities go to, to cover up their debauchery tracks. A must read.
  • Page 98 – The Glamour Career Clinic – great advice on how to further your career and actually be happy in it
  • Page 110 – Election Special: Who’s Your Guy? – practical and unbiased information about where the three main parties stand on different issues. Great for politicalphobes.
  • Page 123 – From catwalk to wheelchair: a Supermodel’s story – the sad but inspiring story about the hot D&G male model who became paralysed but is building up his life. Very uplifiting.
Olivia Palermo - Glamour magazine's new style crush, and mine too!

Olivia Palermo - Glamour magazine's new style crush, and mine too!

One article that I didn’t enjoy was about the author Justine Kilkerr and her schizophrenic father (page 83); I’m all for increased awareness about mental illnesses, I think it’s a really important issue, but I felt that the whole sentiment of the article was completely misguided and it was just an article to promote the author’s new novel with a little box with a couple of facts about schizophrenia stuck on at the end. I feel that features that cover such sensitive issues should be informative and realistic but also inspiring with advice drawn from real experiences, and I believe that this article failed in this.

On a more positive note, Glamour didn’t fail in delivering excellent fashion and beauty and health advice. I particularly enjoyed the Gossip Girl fashion feature (page 174), the Olivia Palermo Look Book (page 180 – I’ve never seen The City but boy I want to steal her style!), the Have a Pretty Day fashion spread (page 228 – girly is in!) and the Summer In Your Make-up Bag beauty spread (page 260 – think sultry eyes, glowing skin and luscious lips).

So, £2 for all that and much more isn’t that bad is it.

Renée Zellweger on the cover of UK Glamour October 2009

At the beginning of every month I always get excited about the new Glamour because I know it’s always going to be a good one. I’m a very fussy person and always have something to criticise about the media and fashion magazines in general, but with Glamour, it’s more positive than negative. The fact that there’s more content than ads is a starter…although I did notice a lot of sneaky promotions thrown into the mix!

Celebrity Interviews

Renée Zellweger has a new movie out, so naturally she’s this month’s Cover Girl. One of the few criticisms about Glamour is that sometimes it’s a little behind the news, compared to weekly magazines which are always on the beat (sometimes too much!) For example, Renée is hailed as “everyone’s favourite singleton” when in fact the news from celebsville is that she’s dating her co-star Bradley Cooper…oops. It’s quite funny though because the whole interview is about her single life and how she’s enjoying spending time on her own doing nothing…imagine if Bradley reads that!

Glamour Book Review: “Twenties Girl” – Sophie Kinsella

When I saw in the last Issue of Glamour that Sophie Kinsella had brought out a new novel, I just knew I had to get onto Amazon immediately. I’m always a little bit apprehensive when she brings out a new book that does not involve one of my favourite modern literary characters, Becky Bloomwood; however, so far with Kinsella’s non-Shopaholic novels, I’ve had positive experiences, and I can honestly say that this latest offering is no exception.

In brief, Twenties Girl is about a young woman called Lara who is, in effect, hopeless in love. One day, she is visited by the 25 year old ghost of her Great Aunt Sadie who haunts her continually and pretty much forces her into helping her search for a missing necklace, along with other challenges along the way, including a love interest.

Despite the fact that Lara has her own problems such as attempting to run a company she knows nothing about and trying to make her ex boyfriend fall in love with her again, Sadie haunts her mercilessly, and over the course of the book, she literally turns Lara’s life upside down. She gradually changes her from an unadventurous hopeless case, into a strong, confidennt woman, by making her carry out strange, sometimes utterly crazy tasks on her behalf; so crazy that you’ll be so torn between physically cringing in embarassment or laughing, you just end up doing both.

Glamour Magazine – Issue 102 September 2009

September 2009

September 2009

I was a bit reluctant to purchase this month’s issue as it had Jordan aka Katie Price on the cover, and recently I have become sick of the whole Katie and Peter saga and have decided to boycott all magazines, newspapers and TV programs featuring either of them. I unfortunately did not anticipate this including my beloved Glamour, my favourite magazine in the world, so because I love Glamour so much, I did break my boycott. For a good cause though because this September issue is another classic keeper.

Firstly, it’s National Glamour Week in September so this means DISCOUNTS DISCOUNTS DISCOUNTS. There are coupons for 25% off at High Street favourites including Warehouse (result!), Uniqlo, and Mango. There’s also 25% off at Oli (fashion website) and Calvin Klein Underwear, so make sure you grab this month’s issue to prepare you for a great week of SHOPPING! It’s perfecting for updating your new season wardrobe, and there are even discounts for haircuts, restaurants and bars, so September will definitely be a fun, Glamourous month.

This edition is also filled to the brim with fashion (“781 Hot Autumn Looks”) and beuaty (“The 10 Greatest Looks of All Time”) advice and there’s even a separate booklet (“The Ultimate A-List Beauty Notebook”) dedicated to beauty, so it’s practically two magazines in one!

On a more serious note, the main feature article is the story of the author Clara Salaman who escaped from a religious cult in which she grew up. There is also an article about the German popstar Nadja Benaissa from No Angels who has been accused of having unprotected sex with men deliberately, knowing she is HIV positive.

Back to the articles and features those at Glamour know so well relate to us readers, there’s a sweet article about the little things men secretly love about their women – “25 little things you do that guys secretly love” – and how not to be the “weirdo at work”.

Last but CERTAINLY not least is the 11 page spread on the 50 sexiest men in the WORLD according to Glamour, and believe me, they’ve got it spot on! Get your scissors and prit-sticks ready!

Glamour Magazine – Issue 101 August 2009

August 2009

August 2009

This edition of Glamour is by far one of my favourites this year. It’s jam packed full of interesting real-life stories, interviews (including with the beautiful Blake Lively), great beauty tips, and an excellent exercise regime to get the “perfect” bikini body (“The Sexy Stomach – and bum and thighs – plan”). One that actually works I might add! This issue also gives all the gossip from the 2009 Glamour Women of the Year Awards, which I wish I were invited to as it looks like so much fun!

Everyone talks about the September issue of fashion magazines, but this year it’s all about August for the all important lowdown on what’s going to be hot next season (”544 New Season Looks”). Not only do we find out what will be the headline looks of Autumn/Winter 2009, we’re given useful tips on how to look good even a budget. There’s a variety of looks that can be completed with either a £400 pair of “in” jeans or just a simple top from H&M – something for everyone and anyone, on any budget.

This month’s story is of Amber Marks, the author who’s father was the infamous drug baron Howard Marks. Although she speaks of the crimes that he committed, it is hard not to feel sympathy for a young woman who loves her father no matter what.

Other articles and items include “What counnts as cheating now?” which I and a few of my friends found rather shocking at times! The “Would YOU be friends with you?” test is also a must, and can produce some surprising (and some not so surprising) results about your friendships…

This is only a taster of what’s available in this edition; every page (even all the ads!) is definitely worth a look.

It’s £2 well spent!
